Manhunt after jailed Epping hotel asylum seeker mistakenly released

Police have launched a manhunt after a former asylum seeker who sexually assaulted a 14-year-old girl was mistakenly released from prison.
Ethiopian national Hadush Kebatu, who arrived in the UK on a small boat, was jailed for 12 months over the attack in Epping, Essex, last month.
Prison sources said Kebatu was meant to be sent to an immigration detention centre from HMP Chelmsford ahead of a planned deportation. An investigation has been launched by the Prison Service, and an officer has been removed from discharging duties while it takes place.
Essex Police said "fast-paced enquiries have shown that the man boarded a London-bound train at Chelmsford railway station at 12:41 BST".
Justice Secretary David Lammy said he was "appalled" and "livid on behalf of the public that Kebatu is at large".
Speaking to the media, Lammy said Essex Police, the Metropolitan Police and British Transport Police were working together on the case.
"Let's be clear Kebatu committed a nasty sexual assault involving a young child and a woman," he said. "And for those reasons this of course is very serious."
He added he has asked for a "full and immediate investigation" into the release of Kebatu, who he described as a "dangerous individual".
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said Kebatu "must be caught and deported for his crimes".

A Prison Service spokesperson said: "We are urgently working with police to return an offender to custody following a release in error at HMP Chelmsford.
"Public protection is our top priority, and we have launched an investigation into this incident."
A spokesperson for Essex Police said at 12:57 it was informed by the prison services about "an error" to do with "the release of an individual".
"As a result of that, we have launched a search operation to locate them and are working closely with partner agencies," they added.
"These fast-paced enquiries have shown that the man boarded a London-bound train at Chelmsford Railway Station at 12:41.
"We understand the concern the public would have regarding this situation and can assure you we have officers working to urgently locate and detain him."

Kebatu's arrest had sparked protests outside The Bell Hotel in Epping, where he had been living.
In September, Chelmsford Magistrates' Court heard Kebatu tried to kiss the teenage girl on a bench and made numerous sexually explicit comments on 7 July.
The following day, he encountered the same girl and tried to kiss her before sexually assaulting her. He also sexually assaulted a woman who had offered to help him create a CV to find work.
During the trial, Kebatu gave his date of birth as December 1986, making him 38, but court records suggested he was 41.
In September, after being found guilty of five offences, he was sentenced to 12 months and given a five-year sexual harm prevention order, which banned him from approaching or contacting any female.
He was also made to sign the Sex Offenders Register for 10 years.
The court heard it was his "firm wish" to be deported.

Chelmsford's Liberal Democrat MP Marie Goldman called for a rapid public inquiry into how the mistaken release, first reported by The Sun, happened.
"This is utterly unacceptable and has potentially put my constituents in danger," she said. "I expect answers from the Prison Service."
Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch said the "entire system is collapsing under Labour".
"Conservatives voted against Labour's prisoner release program because it was putting predators back on our streets," she said on X.
"But this man has only just been convicted. A level of incompetence that beggars belief."
Reform UK leader Nigel Farage said: "He is now walking the streets of Essex. Britain is broken."

A 70-year-old man has died and three other people have been injured in a helicopter crash in Doncaster, police have confirmed.
Emergency services were called to a field off Ings Lane, Bentley, at about 10:15 GMT.
The pilot, a 41-year-old man, and two other passengers, a 58-year-old woman and a 10-year-old boy, received minor injuries, South Yorkshire Police said.
The aircraft had taken off from Retford Gamston Airport, in Nottinghamshire, shortly before it crashed.
South Yorkshire Police said the older man had died at the scene of the crash "despite the best efforts of medical staff".
"His family is aware and being supported by our officers," they added.
Det Insp Matt Bolger said: "Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the man who sadly died in this tragic incident."

South Yorkshire Police and the government's Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) have launched a joint investigation into the incident.
Det Insp Bolger asked anyone who saw the crash or had information about the incident to contact officers.
"We are particularly keen to hear from those with footage of the helicopter leading up to the crash," he added.
The road remains closed and officers and emergency services are also still at the scene.
Retford Gamston Airport said in a short statement: "We can confirm an aircraft based here, operated by an onsite tenant, has been involved in an incident.
"We've no further information at this time."
A spokesperson for the AAIB said a team of experts in aircraft operations, engineering and recorded data had been deployed to the site.

The BBC's Liz Roberts is at the scene and said a large police cordon had been put in place and a private ambulance had attended.
"About 500m down the lane from where I'm standing I can see more police activity, by the side of the field the helicopter crashed in," she said.
"The scene is no longer accessible. There's a no-fly zone for drones and the road has been closed by the Refood bioenergy site."
Curtis Borkowski, who works on a building site nearby, said he had seen the helicopter going towards Bentley around ten minutes before learning of the crash.
"As it flew over Doncaster, the engine sounded really bad," he said.
Rebecca Booth, who represents Bentley on Doncaster Council, said there were "a lot of people in shock" in the area.
"It's a lovely, thriving community and everyone sticks together," she said.
"Things like this will have an impact on people."
Energy Secretary Ed Miliband, MP for Doncaster North, said the news of the crash was "devastating".
"My thoughts are with the family and friends of the victim of this terrible incident," he said.
"My office are in touch with the relevant authorities including South Yorkshire Police, and I know the whole of Doncaster will be united in having the victim in their thoughts today."
Lee Needham, who also lives in the area, said the crash site was close to houses, train tracks, industrial units and electrical pylons.
"Whoever was piloting the helicopter more than likely saved numerous lives," he said.

A man who was killed in a triple stabbing in west London had a "gentle heart" and "never shied away from helping his community", his family have said in a tribute.
Wayne Broadhurst was out walking his dog on Monday afternoon when he was fatally attacked in Midhurst Gardens in Uxbridge. Two others were also injured, one seriously.
His family added that the 49-year-old was "a devoted and hardworking man who spent his life serving his community as a waste services worker".
Safi Dawood, 22, appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court earlier charged with murder and two counts of attempted murder.
The family tribute added: "His love for animals showed the gentle heart behind his strong work ethic, and his passion for Liverpool FC was something he loved to share with others.
"His loss has left a deep void, not only in the hearts of his family and friends, but across the community he quietly cared for.
"Wayne will be remembered for his kindness, his loyalty, and his genuine willingness to help others. His absence is felt profoundly, and his memory will continue to live on in our community."
Officers and paramedics were called to reports of a triple stabbing at about 17:00 GMT.
Mr Broadhurst died at the scene after suffering multiple stab wounds, the court heard.
A 14-year-old boy and Shahzad Farrukh, 45, were also treated for stab injuries.
Mr Farrukh remains in hospital with life-changing injuries and the teenager who had injuries to his hand has been discharged, the court was told.
Mr Dawood, of Midhurst Gardens, Uxbridge was remanded into custody and is due to appear before the Old Bailey on Monday.
He has also been charged with one count of possessing an offensive weapon following the incident.
