EasyJet flight diverts to Rome over power bank in luggage

A UK-bound EasyJet flight was diverted to Rome after a power bank was found to be charging in a passenger's luggage, it has been revealed.
Flight EZY2618 from Hurghada in Egypt to London Luton landed in the Italian capital on Tuesday night as a "precaution".
The airline said the captain had decided to divert "in line with safety regulations" after a passenger informed crew during the flight that the portable charger was in the hold of the aircraft. Many airlines have toughened rules on power banks, often requiring that they be stored in hand luggage because of the risk of lithium-ion batteries catching fire.
The flight touched down safely at Rome Fiumicino and was rescheduled to the next day.
Data from FlightRadar24 showed the flight cruising at 36,000ft when almost three hours into its journey, over the Adriatic Sea, it took a sharp left-hand turn and landed 20 minutes later.
It is understood there was no issue with the power bank, but regulations state power banks are not allowed to be charging in the hold during a flight.
A spokesperson for the airline said: "The aircraft landed safely and passengers disembarked routinely and we provided hotel accommodation and meals where available. As some customers remained in the airport, they were provided with refreshments.
"The safety of its passengers and crew is EasyJet's highest priority and EasyJet operates its fleet of aircraft in strict compliance with all manufacturers' guidelines.
"We would like to apologise to all passengers for any inconvenience caused by the diversion and subsequent delay."
EasyJet's rules, external state that power banks are accepted on aircraft in cabin baggage only but are "prohibited from use" and "must not be used to charge other devices".
A maximum of two power banks per customer are allowed, they must not exceed 160 Watt-hour (Wh) for lithium batteries and they must be individually protected such as in their original packing or a plastic bag.
Announcements are often made by cabin crew warning against their use.
Other airlines have brought in similar rules.
Ryanair, external says power banks are not allowed in checked baggage, cannot go in overhead compartments, and must not be used to charge or power other portable electronic devices during taxi, take-off or landing.
British Airways, external says power banks must not exceed 100Wh, they must be stored in the seat pocket or a bag placed under the seat in front, and plug sockets on planes cannot be used to charge power banks themselves.
The strict rules reflect the fire hazards of lithium-ion batteries - which most power banks use. They carry a risk of overheating or catching fire which is easier to deal with in the cabin than in the hold.
Data from the UK Civil Aviation Authority shows that in 2024, two flights a week globally experienced "thermal runway incidents" to do with lithium batteries, which includes incidents such as passengers reporting leaving power banks in their hold luggage and battery fires.
The International Civil Aviation Organisation, a UN agency, introduced new restrictions, external for power banks in March.
A man caught fire at Melbourne international airport in November 2025 after a lithium power bank in his pocket ignited, leaving him with burns to his leg and fingers.
In January 2025, authorities said a portable power bank was the likely cause of a fire that destroyed a passenger plane in South Korea, leaving three people with minor injuries.

Almost 1,000 migrants crossed the English Channel over the bank holiday weekend, latest Home Office figures show.
A total of 989 people arrived in the UK in 14 boats between Friday and Monday, after almost a fortnight without any crossings.
It means more than one in 10 people entering the country from mainland Europe so far this year arrived during the bank holiday weekend.
The Home Office said that it was "bearing down" on small boat crossings.
A landmark deal has been signed with France to boost "enforcement action on beaches and put people smugglers behind bars", it added.
The Home Office said that it had stopped more than 42,000 migrants trying to cross the Channel since the 2024 election.
"We have removed or deported almost 60,000 people who were here illegally and are going further to remove the incentives that draw illegal migrants to this country," it added.

Household energy prices will rise by 13% a year in July, as soaring wholesale costs caused by the US-Israel war with Iran hit bills for the first time.
Regulator Ofgem says the war means a household using a typical amount of gas and electricity will pay £221 more a year, with an annual bill of £1,862.
The cap affects millions of homes on variable tariffs in England, Scotland and Wales, and suppliers are warning it could go even higher in the colder winter months without an end to the conflict.
Energy costs have rocketed since Iran responded to US and Israeli attacks by effectively blocking the crucial Strait of Hormuz shipping route.
A fifth of the world's oil and gas usually flows through the waterway.

The jump in bills will equate to a rise of £18 a month for the average household using both electricity and gas, with households seeing an increase of 24% on their gas bills and 5% on their electricity bills. Standing charges are almost unchanged.
The energy cap covers 33 million households in England, Wales and Scotland. Regulation and bills are different in Northern Ireland.
The cap fixes the maximum amount customers can be charged for each unit of gas and electricity via variable tariffs. About 40% of bill-payers have fixed tariffs and are unaffected because their price will not change until the end of their fixed term.
The cap has been illustrated by Ofgem, by calculating the annual bill for a "typical household" using 11,500 kWh of gas and 2,700 kWh of electricity a year with a single bill for gas and electricity, settled by direct debit.

The jump in costs for households is set to kick in after domestic energy bills fell by 7% between April and July, following a shake-up in charges by the government.
That change was announced just before the Iran war began. However, the cap from July to September reflects the 25% increase in the global price of gas caused by the war, particularly the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
The wholesale price, paid by suppliers, makes up about 40% of a household gas and electricity bill. Some energy suppliers have forecast that energy prices could move even higher by the autumn and winter.
Ofgem chief executive Tim Jarvis said: "We understand many will be concerned about rising prices.
"While energy use typically falls over the summer months, there are still practical steps households can take to manage costs, including exploring fixed tariffs or changing their payment method."
The government has said it is working on plans for provide targeted support for those most in need if bills were expensive into the winter, when households use more energy.
A typical household is already paying about £600 a year more than before the price shock of 2022-23, although the latest increase and total bills are lower than that crisis period, which was partly by Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Billions of pounds is owed to suppliers in unpaid bills, and many people with disabilities have high energy use throughout the year to run specialist equipment.

Ofgem has decided to reduce what it believes to be a "typical" level of energy use, because many households have cut back owing to high prices of recent years, and energy efficiency has improved. Its new estimate is 9,500 kWh of gas and 2,500 kWh of electricity a year.
That could mask what remains a sharp rise in prices, and will not change the fact that consumers will pay considerably more for each unit of energy.

• The "typical" bill under current usage estimates will be £1,862 (a rise of £221 a year)
• The "typical" bill under possible new usage estimates will be £1,663. However, the current cap using those estimates would be about £1,490, so the rise would be similar

Oil prices have dropped following a report the US and Iran have reached a deal, subject to President Donald Trump's approval.
Axios reported officials had made an agreement over an extended ceasefire on Thursday. It drove the price of a barrel of Brent crude down to a low of $93.36 from a earlier high of $98, before rebounding to about $94.
Prices had jumped earlier after the US carried out new attacks on Iran, targeting a military site in Bandar Abbas, a strategic port city.
The strikes occurred despite an ongoing ceasefire between Tehran and Washington to allow for talks to end the three-month-long war that has effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz waterway, pushing up global energy costs.
Around a fifth of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies usually pass through the strait.
Shortly after the US and Israel launched airstrikes on Iran on 28 February, Tehran responded by threatening to attack vessels using the shipping route.
Global energy prices have swung wildly since the conflict began, with Brent crude - the global oil benchmark - briefly surging to around $120 a barrel. Before the war it was trading at closer to $70.
The cost of oil had fallen sharply this week on hopes that a deal would soon be reached to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
On Thursday afternoon, US media outlet Axios reported, external Iran and the US had reached an agreement for a 60-day ceasefire extension and the start of talks on Tehran's nuclear program.
The agreement requires final approval from Trump, who has told negotiators that he wanted a few days to make the final decision, Axios reported.
The latest strikes mark the second time in three days that the US has attacked targets in Iran, with Washington saying they were conducted in self defence.
The US Central Command (Centcom) said its forces also shot down four Iranian drones "that posed a threat around the Strait of Hormuz".
Centcom confirmed strikes on southern Iran earlier this week, in which it targeted Iranian missile sites and boats attempting to lay mines in the strait.
It said those strikes were designed "to protect our troops from threats posed by Iranian forces".
Iran called the new attacks "a grave violation of the ceasefire" and said it "will not leave any act of hostility unanswered."
Kuwait's military said on Thursday that it was intercepting "hostile missile and drone threats" without providing further details.
